Guitarist Joan Griffith and Brazilian recorderist Clea Galhano and Lucia have been playing together over the last few years, and will be joined on the 21st by pianist Laura Caviani, also of Sambanova, and Gordy Johnson (bass) and Gary Gauger (drums), in an evening of all Brazilian music.
They will play tunes from their soon to be released CD, including songs by Jobim, Gismonti, Baden Powell, Hermeto Pascoal, originals by Joan Griffith and Lucia Newell, and many others, in a post celebration of Carnaval.

Pianist Laura Caviani is a musician for all seasons, and she always sparkles during the holidays. Her 1999 holiday release Angels We Haven’t Heard remains a Twin Cities jazz favorite this time of year. Lucia Newell was guest vocalist on that CD, and she joins this party along with Pete Whitman (sax), Tom Lewis (bass) and Phil Hey (drums).

Sunday, February 18: The Jazz Vocalists of Minnesota (JzVMn) is dedicated to the professional advancement of vocal jazz performers and the promotion of vocal jazz to the general public. This Sunday, February 18, they will present a “Jammin’ Showcase” from 4 to 7 PM at the Dakota County Music Café, accompanied by Mary Louise Knudtson on piano, Jocko MacNelly on bass and Greg Schutte on drums.

Many of the 25 Jazz Vocalists who are members of JzVMn will sing that night, and will be performing a wide variety of jazz standards, Brazilian music and some originals. On Saturday, September 29th, Noon – 5 pm, the Jazz Vocalists of Minnesota will offer a workshop to the public on “Jazz Singing—Getting It Together.” Aimed at student and performing vocalists (age 16+) as well as anyone fascinated by the art of jazz singing, the workshop will include presentations by acclaimed area vocalists/educators, Bruce Henry, Arne Fogel, Vicky Mountain, Connie Olson and Rhonda Laurie, covering such topics as jazz styles, improvisation and scat, “finding the key,” song forms, charts, band etiquette, stage presence and more. On hand to help with demonstrations and group exercises will be an acclaimed trio from the metro area. Friday & Saturday, September 16 and 17, “Hats Off to Betty Carter!” at the Artists’ Quarter, Lucia Newell will be singing with Laura Caviani on piano, Terry Burns on bass and Phil Hey on drums. (Check out the article on Phil Hey in the September issue of Mpls. St. Paul Magazine on page 282.) We will be performing a tribute to the late and truly great Betty ‘Bebop’ Carter, to her unique style, scat, innovative arrangements, and vast contribution to jazz singing and jazz music. Although Betty left us eight years ago, in September of 1998, her voice continues to echo in our ears and hearts and minds. This is what Steve Huey of the All Music Guide had to say:

“Arguably the most adventurous female jazz singer of all time, Betty Carter was an idiosyncratic stylist and a restless improviser who pushed the limits of melody and harmony as much as any bebop horn player. The husky-voiced Carter was capable of radical, off-the-cuff reworkings of whatever she sang, abruptly changing tempos and dynamics, or rearranging the lyrics into distinctive, off-the-beat rhythmic patterns. She could solo for 20 minutes, scat at lightning speed, or drive home an emotion with wordless, bluesy moans and sighs. She wasn't quite avant-garde, but she was definitely "out." Yet as much as Carter was fascinated by pure, abstract sound, she was also a sensitive lyric interpreter when she chose, a tender and sensual ballad singer sometimes given to suggestive asides.”

Sunday, September 18, Lucia will be singing and reading poetry celebrating Love and Loss with SOUL CAFE. Laura Caviani on piano, Brad Holden on sax, Steve Blons on guitar. Friday, September 30, Lucia Newell will be making a live recording with SOUL CAFÉ at Creation Audio. Laura Caviani on piano, Brad Holden on sax, Steve Blons on guitar comprise the band. The songs are some of the classics of Rodgers and Hart, and the poetry is by Pablo Neruda. Creation Audio will be set up like a small café, with wine and beer and hors d’oeuvres, and the group will perform live in front of the audience while recorded by Steve Wiese.

This will be the last performance at the Hotel Sofitel, because they've been told by Sofitel management that they plan to discontinue live music. It's been a great run. CD Release! On Thursday, September 16, at the Artists' Quarter in St. Paul, Lucia Newell & Departure Point will release their new CD Steeped in Strayhorn. This is a long awaited collection of Billy Strayhorn tunes with swingin' fresh new arrangements, mostly written by Pete Whitman. It also includes a gorgeous ballad by Whitman.

Departure Point is a well-oiled group of tremendous jazz musicians, consisting of Pete Whitman on tenor sax, Dave Jensen on trumpet and flugel horn, Jeff Rinear on trombone, Laura Caviani on piano, Gordy Johnson on bass and Phil Hey on drums.
